The Ecological Airport of Galápagos has become the first in Latin America and the Caribbean to be recognised as carbon-neutral and the second in all the Americas.
This achievement is certified by the ACI (Airports Council International) via the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, the only institutionally endorsed system permitting evaluation and recognition of the efforts made by the airports participating in the programme to manage and reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.
The Level 4 “Neutrality” accreditation was received on 18 December, 2017, marking an important precedent in the region setting the course which all airports in the world should follow, confirming that it is possible to look after the environment without neglecting quality airport operation.
The process of certification began in the year 2014 and since then it has been possible to reduce the emission of gases and the greenhouse effect while operating the airport sustainably. Furthermore, it is the first airport in the world to function 100% with renewable energy (solar and wind).
