Argentine passport holders will now be able to pass immigration at Ezeiza International Airport using biometric technology. The identification system, common in most major North American and European airports, allows travellers to present their passports to a biometric scanner that registers their departure or entry to the country. This new system is a very big step, said Interior Minister Rogelio Frigerio, who accompanied Transport Minister Guillermo Dietrich during yesterdays launch of the services. These biometric doors are not only going to speed up transit times for travellers but also allow the precise collection of information, he added.Buenos Aires Citys Aeroparque airport will receive similar technology, with eight biometric sets schedule to arrive soon, the Transport Ministry announced. The system currently only processes passports but will eventually recognise national ID documents, known as DNIs.Ten of the 80 million immigration procedures registered in Argentina each year take place at the countrys main international airport, in city of Ezeiza in greater Buenos Aires.
